The next version of PetPress will be version 2.2, and should be released in mid-January. Although development is essentially done, it doesn’t seem like a great idea to try to test during the holiday season as people tend to be focused on other things. I am taking the extra time to build in some improved error handling and diagnostics into this next version.

The big feature of the next version is called “PetPress Data Manager”, a way to edit animal data right in your website instead of getting it from a back-end system such as PetPoint. Using the Data Manager (which will be a premium feature) means you don’t even have to have a back-end system at all for the purposes of showing your animals (though I would like to emphasize that Data Manager is not a shelter management system and may not conform to whatever legal or regulatory requirements for a shelter management system that you may have in your region). Data Manager isn’t intended for users who do have a shelter management system connected — those users should make their edits in their shelter management system.

Another feature coming up is yet shorter refresh intervals, which is one of the most requested features. Premium users will have the option to shorten the refresh interval to as little as five minutes. Whether you’d want to is another question, which I explore in this post regarding refresh intervals in PetPress.

The current version of PetPress is compatible with the upcoming WordPress 6.9, and no changes should be required to websites that are upgrading.

Version 2.1.1 is in development, and will contain mostly minor fixes and enhancements. For premium users, the data refresh interval can be shortened to as little as five minutes, though PetPoint users with a large number of animals may not be able to refresh as quickly. Notes about refresh intervals will be posted soon.

Next on the road map is support for RescueGroups.org data feeds. This is expected in version 2.2, sometime this winter.
